Frequently Asked Questions

SAFETY

Q: What sort of safety measures do you employ?

A: Regardless of your endeavor; business, recreation or professional flying, TailWind Aviation (TWA) takes the issue of safety very, very seriously.

We will not allow unsafe practices, period. Whether you're an aircraft owner or renter, you will be asked to adhere to a stringent policy of specific safety practices.

TWA expects its students, clients and partners to immerse themselves into the same culture of safety and risk management, an attitude of excellence if you will, as a pro-am golfer, or pro-am race car driver. Perfect and safe practice makes perfect, and we want you to have a perfectly great experience.

There are few more rewarding activities than flying, and we want to be surrounded by those who share that thinking and will always act in a safe, responsible manner.

FINANCING

Q: Does TailWind Aviation offer financing?

A: The short answer: YES! We offer many financing programs to suit your goals. Just ask.

BUSINESS

Q: How expensive is to incorporate a private aircraft into my travel routine?

A: We can show you how you can add aviation to your business travelling at a low net cost. We'll give you many examples of successful business people who have done it and are glad they did.

Q: How long will it take me to be certified to fly for business?

A: Most of our business students are learning to fly while they conduct business. This dramatically reduces the net cost and time to qualify. You will be paired with an instructor who will guide you strategically through that process.

The actual time it takes really depends on you. We've had students qualify in as little as a month, some students have taken as long as a year. The time it takes you will depend on a number of factors. How many times can you fly in a week? How many hours can you devote to study? Many of these questions can't be answered properly until we've conducted our pre-admission questionnaire. We will design a curriculum specifically designed for you.

PROFESSIONAL

Q: What are the requirements to fly for an airline?

A: Most flight schools will answer this question talking about the flying time and certificates required. We don't. We talk and teach about required skills. That's what the airlines want - a person who has a specific skillset - not numbers of hours in the air. You could spend 2,000 hours flying and still not be able to demonstrate the skills the airlines require. Many thousands of aspiring airline pilot students discover this after they have emptied their bank account and have become discouraged to the point of quitting.

Furthermore, many of these students are getting advise from people who have never accomplished what they are advising about. These so called advisors are actually trying to build their own time to go to the airlines using the students nickel and precious time. The fact is, there are few local flight instructors who KNOW how to get a job at the airlines.

Q: What makes TWA different?

A: Our students get jobs! We have a 100% success rate with the students we recommend to the airlines - and there are good reasons for that - three to be exact:

  1. Our graduating students have excellent instrument skills.

  2. Our graduating students have excellent crew skills.

  3. Our endorsement carries a lot of weight.

Airlines know that when a student receives our endorsement, they are ready to go to work. All that's left is learning the airline's way of doing business and learning the specific aircraft the airlines utilize.

RECREATIONAL

Q: What if I just want to fly around my town for fun. How long will it take for me to qualify?

A: Our standard answer — It depends on you. We've had students qualify to fly by themselves in as little as a weekend. Most will take about two to three weeks.

Q: Will I be allowed to fly my friends and family around?

A: In order to fly other people around, you’ll need to obtain either a Sport Pilot or Private Pilot license. We can show you what it takes to earn both and what each allows you to do — just let us know you want to be a recreational pilot.

Q: What about my health? I've heard that pilots need nearly perfect health.

A: That's partially true and mostly false. Pilots who fly many passengers (commercial pilots) need excellent health and there are ongoing requirements to stay healthy. HOWEVER, if you you just want to fly yourself around and maybe one other person, then if you're healthy enough to obtain a driver's license, you are healthy enough (in most cases) to fly. Click or call us, we'll talk about it.
